1:00-2:00                            “South Carolina Guardianship and Conservatorship: Top 10 Things to Know”                  Speakers: Becky Hewitt and Katherine Heath       

Providers are often tasked with the difficult challenge of assisting Residents who lack the capacity to make safe, reasonable decisions. This can be especially problematic when no one is able or willing to help them manage their clinical care plan and/or financial matters, including Medicaid eligibility. Attendees will gain understanding into how best support Residents in these difficult circumstances as HBS will provide insight to legal surrogates and the adjudication process. This session will help avoid delays in collecting hard-earned revenue.

  • Share best practices from Phase 1 – successful retention strategies.
  • Detail strategies for launching, supporting, and evaluating low burden/high bundle of best practices and the impact to improve staff retention.
  • Summarize the phase-3 approach for the spread of best practices using High-Value Business Model Change Package.

10:00-12:00        “ Who is in my house? Understanding and Managing the Behavioral Health needs of my Residents”              Speaker: Dr. Wayne Tasker

The demographics have changed over the last few years in the long-term care facilities. There has been a significant number of residents with mental health issues. Over time, residents develop more complex medical and psychological problems, presenting new challenges and complicated issues in their care and management, especially in the regulation of their medication and management, especially in the regulation of their medication and management of their behaviors. The pandemic has also produced new stressors on residents and their families, creating even more demands and stress on facility staff. With a wide variety of diagnoses (ranging from depression and substance abuse to paranoid schizophrenics), developing safe and effective programs of care have become increasingly difficult. The purpose of this program is to address the State requirements and examine different ways to approach and manage the treatment and care of residents with identified behavioral health issues.

This session will focus on current legislative issues effecting the long term care industry.

1:00-3:00            “DHEC Round-Up”                           Speakers: Amber Capers, JoMonica Taylor, and Todd McAlhany

This session will focus on the current trends in Life Safety and CRCF citations. In addition, the new reporting form will be discussed.

 

Wednesday, August 9th

8:30-9:30            “Change is Coming in SPADEs”                    Speaker: Joe VanEaton

MDS v1.18.11 has expanded to 58 pages primarily due to the addition of Standardized Patient Assessment Data Elements or SPADEs. Understanding the reason for this expansion and how CMS intends for SNF’s to utilize these new data elements is critical.

9:30-10:30            “Multi-Disciplinary Approach to the Schizophrenia Audit”                    Speaker: Jim McMackin

Objectives;

  • Understand process of the schizophrenia audit
  • Understand how the schizophrenia audit effect the Star Rating
