Session Description:

In this seminar you are about to take a fun, but academic journey exploring other ways and methods to treat dementia from a nonpharmaceutical lens. Nonpharmaceutical interventions are treatments that manage illnesses without taking drugs. Allthough there are other drug free interventions such as pet therapy and arts and crafts, this learning series focuses on four different nonpharmaceutical methods for dementia care: cognitive training, music therapy, physical activity, and social interaction, ending with a review/evaluation of all four interventions. Come learn how to move your activities into meaningful, therapeutic activities for those with dementia.

Drug free methods of interventions can be effective in improving psychological well-being, social engagement, and cognitive functioning in patients experiencing mild and moderate dementia. These types of interventions help to treat memory loss, difficulty in learning new information, social interaction, and communication. Most specifically, however, nonpharmaceutical interventions help caregivers improve communication and interactions with patients and/or loved ones.

This seminar, therefore, is mostly directed to activity professionals, direct care givers but is also apppropriate for administrators, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, and nurses.

All material is evidenced-based, and is presented in an active learning environment, including fun as well as interactive activities conducive to optimal learning and understanding.
