Speaker: Catherine Selman, SW
Session Description: Social workers are at the heart of long-term care…advocating for residents, supporting families, navigating difficult situations, addressing behavioral and emotional needs, and helping the interdisciplinary team provide care that is both compassionate and compliant. But the challenges of today’s nursing home and assisted living environment require every member of the team to understand the human, ethical, and regulatory issues that shape resident care. This engaging, practical educational event is designed with Social Workers at the center, while providing valuable insight for Administrators, Nurses, Activity Directors, and other members of the long-term care team. Participants will explore the challenges that can make long-term care complex; including discharge planning, PASRR and appropriate placement, behavioral and emotional health, challenging behaviors, ethical dilemmas, sexuality and intimacy in aging services, and the often-overlooked responsibility of taking care of ourselves while caring for others. Through “state-specific,” real-world scenarios, interactive discussion, and practical strategies, participants will examine how to respond when there is no easy answer, how to balance resident rights with safety and regulatory expectations, and how to preserve dignity, choice, autonomy, and person-centered care in difficult situations.
